UPI Rules Changing from August 1: New Limits, AutoPay Restrictions & What You Must Know

Starting from August 1, 2025, major changes are being implemented in the UPI (Unified Payments Interface) system across India. These changes will directly impact users of popular UPI apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and BHIM. The goal of these updates is to reduce server load, improve reliability, and ensure smoother digital payment experiences. Here’s a complete guide to all the updates you should be aware of.

Balance Check Limit: Now Capped at 50 Times Per Day

One of the most important changes is the limit on how many times a user can check their bank account balance through UPI. Now, you will only be able to check your balance 50 times per day per UPI app. This step is taken to reduce unnecessary backend requests and improve overall performance during high traffic hours.

Viewing Linked Accounts Limited to 25 Times Daily

Another update involves viewing your linked bank accounts. From August, users can only view their linked bank accounts 25 times per day per app. This includes switching accounts or accessing account settings. This change ensures that UPI servers remain efficient even during peak transaction periods.

Transaction Status Refresh Limit: Only 3 Attempts

Users will now be allowed to refresh a transaction status only three times, with a minimum 90-second gap between each refresh. This rule is aimed at reducing repeated and unnecessary server hits caused by impatient status checks during pending or failed transactions.

AutoPay Transactions Now Have Time Restrictions

Recurring UPI payments like electricity bills, mobile recharges, and OTT subscriptions will now only be processed during non-peak hours. Peak hours have been defined as:

  • 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

  • 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM

This change is introduced to minimize server overload and ensure that real-time UPI transfers work smoothly during high-traffic hours.

Automatic Balance Updates After Transactions

To reduce manual balance check frequency, users will now receive automatic balance updates after every UPI transaction. This means you’ll no longer need to manually check your bank balance after sending or receiving money via UPI, as it will be displayed by default in the transaction confirmation.

Transaction Amount Limits Remain the Same

There is no change in the existing UPI transaction amount caps. The current limits are:

  • ₹1 lakh per day for normal transactions

  • ₹5 lakh for specific categories like IPOs and government payments

These limits remain unchanged and will continue to apply after August 1.

Impact on Apps like GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, and More

All UPI-enabled apps will have to enforce these new rules:

  • Users who frequently check their balance will need to adjust their habits.

  • Those using AutoPay for bills or subscriptions will need to ensure their transactions don’t fall during peak restricted times.

  • Payment status refreshes will be controlled automatically by the app.

Tips to Adjust to These Changes

  1. Limit balance checks: Try not to check your account balance more than needed. Use apps that display updated balances after transactions.

  2. Plan recurring payments: Schedule AutoPay during non-peak hours like early morning or mid-afternoon.

  3. Avoid excessive refresh attempts: Wait patiently after initiating a transaction. If delayed, retry after 90 seconds.

  4. Minimize switching between accounts: Use your most active account as the default to avoid hitting the 25-view limit.

  5. Update your app: Ensure you are using the latest version of your UPI app so all these changes work seamlessly.

Why Are These Changes Being Made?

The UPI system handles millions of transactions daily. During peak hours, too many balance checks, account switches, or repeated status refreshes slow down the network and sometimes lead to failed payments. These new rules are meant to optimize traffic, reduce system stress, and improve the speed and reliability of real-time money transfers.
